Acupuncture
"Health is a complete state of harmony of the body, mind and spirit"
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one of the most widely practiced complementary medical treatments in the UK and involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points throughout the body. Acupuncture is a system of healing which has been practised in China and other Eastern countries for thousands of years, it adopts a holistic approach to healthcare, considering the mind and body as one and is based on the idea that a blockage or disturbance in the flow of ‘qi’ (a term used in Traditional Chinese Medicine theory to describe body processes and functions) can cause health issues. Although often described as a means of pain relief, it is in fact used to treat people with a wide range of illnesses.
What will my acupuncturist do?
During the initial consultation we will go through your full medical history, read your pulse, look at your tongue and examine the site of your symptoms if appropriate. A full diagnosis will be made in Chinese Medicine terms and your individual treatment plan made, a combination of points will be chosen according to your symptoms and what is right for your body. Alternative techniques may be used if necessary such as moxibustion, cupping or guasha, these will be explained and discussed at the appointment. Single use sterile needles are used and safely disposed of after every treatment.

What will it feel like?
Acupuncture needles are so fine that most people don’t feel them being inserted, you may feel a mild tingle or dull ache as the needle is adjusted, this is normal. Most people feel deeply relaxed during treatment and those people with an aversion to needles often end up enjoying acupuncture due to its positive effects and relaxing treatments.
How many treatments will I need?
Each patient’s treatment plan will be different because acupuncture treats the person not just the condition they have. Usually patient’s require weekly sessions to begin with. Long term health complaints may require bi-weekly treatments to begin with and monthly ongoing sessions. Patients with lifelong conditions may choose to use acupuncture as an ongoing way to help manage their health and wellbeing. How often you should come for treatment will be discussed with you at your first appointment.
Is acupuncture safe?
When practised by a licensed, well trained acupuncturist, acupuncture is an extremely safe treatment for all ages from infants to elderly. It is important to seek an appropriately and comprehensively trained acupuncturist.
